Alan Varela was a Portuguese footballer who played as a midfielder and defender in the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga during his career. He is remembered by many fans as one of the greatest midfielders ever to play in the English top flight.
Varela began his professional career with Sampdoria in Italy and moved on to Manchester United where he made a significant impact during his time at Old Trafford. However, he struggled to find consistency and eventually left the club for Fulham, leaving him without a contract.
After leaving Fulham, Varela went on to play for various clubs in Europe, including Juventus, Barcelona, and Chelsea. He won two Serie A titles and three UEFA Champions League titles with each team.
In 2014, Varela joined FC Porto, where he quickly established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe. He helped Porto win the UEFA Europa League in 2015 and the UEFA Super Cup in 2016, becoming one of only four players to have won both competitions.
However, in 2017, Varela suffered a serious injury that ruled him out for several months. Despite this setback, he returned to the pitch and helped Porto finish second in the league and reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Despite his struggles, Varela remained committed to the club and continued to help Porto win matches. In 2019, he was named the Footballer of the Year by The Football Writers Association (TFA).
Varela's legacy as a player will always be remembered, but his contributions to the club and the sport will continue to inspire future generations of footballers.
